Henderson is the county seat for Rusk county in the Piney woods. Major highways are State Highway 64, 42, 43 and Highway 259 and 79. Lake Cherokee in Gregg and Rusk county is 12 miles long and includes 100 miles of shoreline.  The water controlling authority is the Cherokee Water Company.

Martin Creek Lake in Panola and Rusk county is 4,981 acres with a maximum depth of 35 feet and water controlling authority is Luminant Energy.

Lake Striker is 1,863 acres 20 miles east of Jacksonville. Maximum water depth is 35 feet and the water controlling authority is Angelina-Nacogdoches Co Water Control & Authority District No. 1.
