505 Ranch Club
For those who want a fast commute to DFW, check out 505 Ranch Club. 505 Ranch Club covers 505 acres and offers its residents a gated entry, waterfront, ranch homes, polo and equestrian center, owners lodge, campsites, guest cottages, off-roading, hiking, and skeet shooting.
Cedar Creek Country Club
The Cedar Creek Country Club is only one hour away from downtown Dallas. It is easily accessible from Highway 175 in Kemp. There is an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool staffed with a lifeguard, tennis courts, and clubhouse with activities plus a dining room that is open six days a week. They offer several different membership packages from social membership to charter membership. Click here for membership information. There are many different styles of homes in the area—golf course homes, waterfront, and off-water.
Long Cove
Resort living in a gated community. 1,200 acres and 7 miles of shoreline. They definitely have brought fun to family living with a 9-hole golf course, biking/hiking trails, fully stocked toy barn (no need to load bikes, outdoor games, kayaks, and etc.), tennis courts, basketball courts, ping pong, pool tables, and more. Fantastic swimming pool with open water views. Amphitheater for concerts. Country Club setting. No need to worry about the boat. With a call to the marina, the boat will be waiting in a slip. This is one of our newest development and if you want to be totally spoiled - this is the area for you.
Pinnacle Club
The Pinnacle Club is a gated community at Cedar Creek Lake located off of Highway 198 & CR 2531. They offer an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, wading pool, fitness center, pavilion, clubhouse with dining, and a marina. They also have a huge July 4th celebration called the Thunder Over Cedar Creek Lake. Golfing is open to the public. This exclusive area offers golf course homes, waterfront homes, and off-water homes. Deer also claim the Pinnacle as their home. Click here for membership information.
Star Harbor
Star Harbor is located in Malakoff on Cedar Creek Lake on the south side at Highway 198 and FM 3062. Star Harbor is not a country club. They are their own little city with police, water, and the only community on Cedar Creek Lake that has Atmos Gas service. Star Harbor is artistic with the Star Harbor Watercolor Society. Star Harbor does offer a 9-hole golf course in the center of their community. The homes in the community are off-water, waterfront, and golf course homes.
Kings Creek
Kings Creek Country Club is located off of Highway 274 in Kemp at Cedar Creek Lake. They offer a banquet room and an 18-hole golf course. You can even stay the night and have a buffet the next morning. This is an off-water community and the homes here are golf course homes.
Canton Trade Days
Canton Trade Days is a must see. Once a month from Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday, Canton turns into one of the largest marketplaces. Anything and everything can be found in Canton from antiques, knick knacks, food, clothing, collectibles, furniture, and animals of every kind.
East Texas Arboretum
The East Texas Arboretum & Botanical Society located in Athens (20 miles away) is a 100-acre arboretum featuring walking trails, bluebird trail, suspension bridge, historic Wofford House museum, water gardens and native Texas plantings. The Arboretum is open daily. Events and weddings can also be held at the Arboretum.
NY Texas Zipline Adventures
New York, Texas is right around the corner from Athens. For the thrill of your life try ziplining through the hills and trees of East Texas at NY-TX Zipline Adventures. Work your way through six ziplines and finish on the grandaddy of ziplines, the longest (900 ft, when I went) zipline in Texas.
Purtis Creek State Park
Purtis Creek State Park is a 1,533 acre park with a 355-acre lake. The lake was stocked with Florida largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegills, shad, and red-ear sunfish. Purtis Creek is a catch and release lake. Campsites with water and electricity; water only campsites; primitive campsites (minimum 1/2 mile hike); an overflow camping area; a covered group pavilion; lighted fishing piers; fish-cleaning shelters; boat ramps; courtesy docks; picnic sites; and a playground. The park rents paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes. There are periodic interactive programs and tours.
Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center
The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is an innovative complex with more than 300,000 gallons of aquarium exhibits and visitors can see nearly every major species of freshwater fish found in Texas in its natural habitat. Our grandchildren LOVE the dive tank show and the diver can communicate with the audience. You can even fish and they supply everything you need. A tram will tour is available, picnic grounds, and walking trails abound. Events are held on the grounds. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday.
Wineries & Breweries
East Texas has wineries and breweries. Start at Tara Winery and enjoy a nice brunch or dinner overlooking the vineyards. 3 P's in a Vine located in Athens is #2 on my list to visit. # 3 on my list is M6 Winery in Bullard which had a fantastic chocolate wine pairing. #4 on my list was Kiepersol in Tyler with great wines, distillery, vineyard, restarant, B&B, tours and classes. #5 on my list is the Cedar Creek Brewery with many different craft brews to choose. There are board games and yard games for enjoyment. On weekends they may even have a band playing. #6 on my list is our newest winery, Triple N Ranch Winery and we can't wait to visit.
