Gregg County in upper East Texas

This afternoons blog post is about Gregg county in the upper East area of Texas. Gladewater, Kilgore and Longview (county seat) are the largest towns.⠀

  • Gladewater is known as an Oil boomtown and if you like to go “Antiquing” this town is known as the Antique capital of East Texas.⠀ – Kilgore got its start as an oil boom town. Did you know that at one time Kilgore had the largest oil reserve found in the U.S.? You will find Oil Derricks which are decorated during the holidays with lights and stars. Kilgore College is home to our Famous Kilgore Rangerettes. These talented young ladies brought show business to football in the early 1940’s and they even have their own museum. Living in Kilgore is smaller suburban feel with lots of history and parks. ⠀
  • Longview has a pretty historic downtown, an annual hot air balloon race and festival, plenty of arts and craft festivals, lots of parks, a symphony and ballet. Longview has kept their small town vibe but no longer classified as a small town. For coffee lovers, don’t worry, there are lots of coffee shops.⠀
  • Cherokee Lake is located in Gregg County. There are some very nice homes around Lake Cherokee which do allow Boathouses. The Sabine River winds around a portion of the county.
